Stop what you’re doing and cut the water supply first, then work through the rest. If a pipe burst, a supply line failed, or an appliance flooded a room, the single most important move in the first few minutes is finding your main shutoff valve and turning it off. Everything after that is about limiting how far the water travels, what it soaks into, and how much secondary damage, mold, rot, warped floors, ruined drywall, you’ll be dealing with a week from now. Here is what to do, in order.
Step 1: Stop the Source and Make the Space Safe
If you can identify the source, shut it off at the closest valve first. Washing machine supply lines have individual shutoffs behind the unit. Toilets have a valve at the base of the wall. Water heaters have a dedicated shutoff on the cold-water inlet line. If you can’t isolate it, go straight to the main shutoff, in most Florida homes it’s near the water meter at the street or at the side of the house near the hose bib.
Before you walk back into the affected area, check two things:
- Electricity. If water is near outlets, under a panel, or soaking through a ceiling below a bathroom, turn off the circuit breaker for that zone. Water and live circuits are a fatal combination. If you’re not certain the area is safe, stay out and call an electrician or your utility before re-entering.
- Structural ceiling. A ceiling that’s bulging or sagging is holding standing water above it. Puncture it carefully with a screwdriver in a bucket to relieve the pressure in a controlled spot, rather than letting it collapse on its own.
Step 2: Document Everything Before You Touch It
Insurance adjusters work from evidence. Before you move furniture, pull up rugs, or start mopping, walk through the space with your phone and record video. Narrate what you’re seeing, the source, the extent of standing water, which walls and floors are affected, any belongings that are damaged. Then take still photos. This takes five minutes and can save you thousands of dollars in a disputed claim.
Note the time and date on your footage. If your phone stamps metadata automatically, that’s fine, but saying it out loud in the video creates a backup record.
Step 3: Remove Standing Water and Protect What You Can
Once the space is electrically safe, start moving water out. Wet-dry shop vacs work well for smaller volumes. Mops and towels can handle what’s left on hard floors. If you have a sump pump or can borrow one, use it for larger accumulations.
While you’re working, move what you can:
- Pull rugs and area carpets out of the room, wet carpet holds moisture against subfloor and accelerates mold growth.
- Lift furniture off wet flooring using aluminum foil or wood blocks under the legs. Dye from furniture feet can permanently stain wet carpet.

Do not use a standard household vacuum on standing water. Do not run ceiling fans if there’s any chance the ceiling above is wet, the motor can short.
What NOT to Do in the First 24 Hours
Some instincts make the situation worse:
Don’t assume it’s dry because the surface feels dry. Water migrates into wall cavities, under flooring, and behind baseboards fast. Plaster and drywall can feel dry to the touch within hours while the wood framing behind them stays saturated for days. Mold can begin colonizing wet organic material, drywall paper, wood, insulation, within 24 to 48 hours under Florida’s humidity and temperature conditions. Surface dryness is not a reliable indicator.
Don’t run the HVAC system if ducts pass through the affected area. You risk spreading contaminated air or moisture through the duct system to unaffected parts of the house.
Don’t discard damaged materials before an adjuster sees them. Move them to a contained area, photograph them, and keep them until your claim is documented. Throwing away flooring or drywall before documentation can complicate reimbursement.
Don’t use bleach as a first response to mold concerns. If you’re already seeing discoloration within the first day, the problem is likely surface-level and the more important step is drying the structure, not surface treatment. Bleach on porous materials like drywall doesn’t penetrate to the root structure of mold colonies.
When to Call a Water Damage Professional
You can manage some of the immediate response yourself. But there are situations where professional equipment and trained assessment aren’t optional:
- The water came from a contaminated source, a backed-up sewer line, an overflowing toilet with waste, or floodwater from outside. This is Category 3 water in industry classification, and it carries bacteria and pathogens that require proper protective equipment and disposal protocols. Don’t treat it like a clean-water spill.
- The affected area is larger than one room, or water has clearly traveled under flooring or into walls.
- You can’t confirm the structure is dry within 24–48 hours. Professional drying equipment, commercial dehumidifiers, air movers, thermal imaging cameras, can reach moisture that household fans cannot. If you’re relying on box fans and a consumer dehumidifier in a Florida summer, you may be slowing the clock rather than stopping it.
- You’re filing an insurance claim. A documented moisture assessment from a restoration company creates a defensible record of scope. Many carriers expect this level of documentation before approving remediation work.

- Reconstruction, once the structure passes clearance, rebuilding what was removed.
The drying phase alone typically takes three to five days depending on materials, ambient conditions, and how quickly the response began. The sooner the process starts, the shorter it runs.
